A simple guide with basic roulette rules

Roulette is a simple game involving a spinning wheel, numbers and colors. The wheel has 37 (if you are playing with American roulette rules) or 38 (if you are playing with European roulette rules) slotted numbers. The numbers from 1 to 36 are red or black while 0 or 00 are green.

The dealer is called a croupier (you can read some terms in our casino FAQ section). He spins the wheel in one direction and rolls the ball in the opposite direction, he collects all the bets, announces when the bets are off and is making sure all the players follow the roulette rules.

Buying chips

A player needs to buy chips from the croupier and chips have different colors depending on the player so the dealer knows whom to pay at the end of a spin. When the ball is spinning slower, the croupier announces that no more bets are allowed. After that point, any bet is illegal and it is called “past posting”. After the spin is over, if the ball falls into a slot that matched your bet, you win.

One of the most important roulette rules is to cash out your chips before leaving the table and not at the cashier cage because a particular color of a chip can have different values during the day. The croupier cannot remember the value of the chips that every player had before he decided to stop playing and for that reason, you must cash out your chips at the table. If you don’t, you risk getting only the minimum amount for your chips.

Simple roulette rules

The roulette rules regarding bets are pretty simple. You can bet not only on numbers but also on colors to. You can make all sorts of combinations like numbers only (1 to 36 or 0 or 00), colors only (red, black, green), numbers and colors (red 34 for example). The numbers are placed on 3 columns (called streets) and 12 lines, not in the natural order, and you can bet on either. There are also groups of numbers you can choose, like 3 groups of 12, 2 groups of 18, odd or even. A square of four numbers can also be chosen and of course 0 or 00. You can even place a bet in total contradiction with the one you placed earlier like betting on red and then on black
